Undoubtable one of the most frequently asked questions relates to the cost of what needs to be done. The cost is dependent on several factors including the scope of work, the location and timeframes. Also, like most other consultancies we will tell you that the work done can be either fast, good or cheap… pick any two.
As independent consultancy we sell hours, charge travel at a specified kilometer rate and invoice disbursements at cost plus an administrative fee. This is determined before project inception and we don’t do work unless all the necessary paperwork is in order.
We realise that time is money and that farmers, developers and landowners are often under pressure to get certain things done. With that said there are a few key aspects that may expedite the processes. 1.Contact us as soon as possible, it’s no use going of in one direction only to find out later that it was the wrong direction. 2. Be prepared, do your research and have an idea of what you need done, this will not only save time but also money. 3. Be realistic about what is achievable, pressing for unrealistic deadlines creates unnecessary risk which may see project run over their timeframes and budgets. Remember, consultants are here to assist you with achieving your goal by using our expertise and knowledge.
Unfortunately, it still often happens that landowners have activities take place either by their own accord or through developers without the proper authorisations in place. In laymen’s terms this constitutes unlawful commencement of activities and are punishable by law through either a fine or imprisonment or both. The process normally includes a retrospective application for environmental authorisation from the competent authority which will fine the transgressor as well as stipulate what corrective measures must be taken. The authorities normally take a more positive approach to perpetrators that proactively address their wrong doings thus it’s better to come clean and do the right thing that try to avoid prosecution. These days with high resolution satellite imagery being freely available transgressions can easily be identified and authorities can act accordingly.
As early as possible. Typically tasks or projects take several months to a couple years to complete. Getting insight into the environmental process early on will help to streamline processes and manage risks such as fatal flaws. In the case of large projects we recomend undertaking a feasibility study upfront to help identify potential environmental constraints and opportunities. This also helps other consultants such as engineers, planners and developers to focus their work within a framework of what may be feasible.
